Since we follow the philosophy of Charlotte Mason, we have built our curriculum on her principles which need to be understood in order to use the curriculum in the most effective way. Miss Mason states in principle 20: “We allow no separation to grow up between the intellectual and ‘spiritual’ life of children, but teach them that the Divine Spirit has constant access to their spirits, and is their Continual Helper in all the interests, duties and joys of life.” 

Another helpful quote by Miss Mason is: 

“This idea of all education springing from and resting upon our relation to Almighty God-we do not merely give a religious education because that would seem to imply the possibility of some other education, a secular education, for example. But we hold that all education is divine, that every good gift of knowledge and insight comes from above, that the Lord the Holy Spirit is the supreme educator of mankind, and that the culmination of all education (which may at the same time be reached by a little child) is that personal knowledge of and intimacy with God in which our being finds its fullest perfection.” 

I would also encourage you to think through what a Christian worldview truly means. Charlotte Mason’s view was not to give children cleaned up moralizing books with only one viewpoint. She believed that all true ideas were divinely inspired and that these ideas were best conveyed through living books, nature, and beauty.  For many years, I followed Charlotte Mason’s recommendation of teaching multiple streams of history during the high school years. Students would study British history, ancient history, and modern history in parallel, reading widely across time periods while making connections between cultures and events.

This approach has many strengths. It exposes students to a wide sweep of history and helps them see the great story of humanity unfolding across centuries.

But after working with thousands of families and guiding many students through the high school years, I began to see something important.

High school is different. Not only developmentally, but practically.

Students at this stage are no longer simply absorbing ideas. They are learning to analyze, synthesize, write, and articulate their thinking in ways that prepare them for adulthood. And at the same time, families must begin thinking about transcripts, credits, and how their student’s education will be communicated to colleges or future opportunities.

So I made a shift.

Instead of using multiple parallel streams of history in high school, I now use a single historical stream integrated with literature and composition.

This approach reflects how history is traditionally studied at the high school and college level. Students move chronologically through a period of history while reading the literature written during that time. They encounter the ideas, conflicts, and cultural movements not only through historical accounts but through the voices of authors, poets, philosophers, and storytellers who lived in that era.

History provides the framework. Literature gives the human experience. Composition allows students to wrestle with ideas and express their own thinking. When these three work together, something powerful happens.

Students begin to see that history is not just a list of events. It is a conversation across generations about truth, power, faith, justice, and human nature.

This integration also supports the development of strong academic writing. Instead of writing in isolation, students are responding to the ideas they encounter in their reading. They learn to form arguments, analyze themes, and support their thoughts with evidence from texts.

In other words, they begin to do the kind of thinking that prepares them for college level work.

There is also a very practical reason for this shift. High school transcripts matter. When homeschool students study history and literature in an integrated chronological course, it becomes much easier to assign clear course titles and credits that align with traditional transcripts.

Admissions offices understand these courses immediately. Parents can confidently document their student’s work. And students are better prepared for the expectations they will encounter in higher education.

None of this means abandoning Charlotte Mason. In fact, I believe it honors her deeper principles. Charlotte Mason cared deeply about giving students living ideas through great books. She believed education should cultivate thoughtful, articulate young people who engage deeply with the world.

Integrating history, literature, and composition does exactly that. Students still read living books. They still narrate and discuss.They still encounter ideas through story rather than textbooks. But now those ideas are woven together in a way that strengthens their thinking and prepares them for the next stage of life.

10th Grade- American History, Literature, and Composition

11th Grade- British History, Literature, and Composition

12th Grade- Government, Economics, and World Literature/Composition

A Gentle Feast uses Charlotte Mason forms instead of traditional grade divisions because children are grouped more by developmental stage than by a narrow grade label.

Here is the general breakdown:

Form I is typically grades 1 through 3
Form II is typically grades 4 through 6
Form III is typically grades 7 through 9
High school is grades 10 through 12

This helps families simplify planning and combine children where it makes sense, while still giving each child what they need at their level.

As for combining students, yes, A Gentle Feast is designed to help you teach family style as much as possible.

Subjects that can often be combined include Morning Time, history, science, poetry, composer study, picture study, read alouds, and many afternoon subjects.

Subjects that should usually be separate are math, language arts, and literature. Those are more skill based and work best when they match the child’s individual level.

So if you have children in nearby forms, you can often combine a great deal of your homeschool day while still individualizing the few subjects that really need it. The membership truly makes this so easy to do since you have access to all subjects and levels all in one place! A typical day with A Gentle Feast is designed to give you a full, rich education without making the day feel cluttered or chaotic. The rhythm is built around the Charlotte Mason principles of short lessons, living books, family learning, and a generous spread of subjects across the week.

For most families, the day begins with Morning Time together. This is the anchor of the day and one of the easiest ways to combine everyone. In Morning Time, you might do Bible, prayer, memory work, poetry, hymn study, composer study, picture study, and shared readings. This gives your whole family a beautiful common experience before anyone moves into more individual work.

After Morning Time, children usually move into the subjects that need to be tailored to their specific level. This is where math and language arts typically fit. Because those are more skill-based, each child works at his or her own level. A younger child may be doing a short phonics or handwriting lesson while an older child is working through written language arts or independent reading. The lessons are meant to be focused and not drawn out.

Once those core individual subjects are done, many families move into the family-style content subjects. Depending on the day, that could be history, science, geography, literature, or other cycle readings. This is where the curriculum really helps simplify things. Instead of juggling completely separate plans for every child, you can often gather children together for shared subjects and then simply adjust expectations by age. A younger child may give an oral narration, an older student may write, and another may add to a timeline or notebook.

A typical mid-morning to lunchtime flow might look something like this:

You gather for Morning Time together.
Then the children move into math and language arts at their own levels.
After that, you come back together for a family subject like history or science.
Students may then complete narrations, notebooking, maps, or follow-up work based on what was read.

Afternoons are often lighter, which is very intentional. This is a wonderful time for the riches of a Charlotte Mason education. You might do nature study, handicrafts, art, music practice, a family read aloud, timeline work, free reading, or simply get outside. Some families also use the afternoons for errands, appointments, co-op, or margin in the day.

What this means in real life is that a typical day does not usually look like sitting at a table for hours doing worksheets. It looks more like a rhythm.

You begin together.
You separate for the few subjects that truly need to be individual.
You come back together for shared learning.
You leave room for beauty, creativity, and life in the afternoon.

The membership truly makes this so easy to do since you have access to all subjects and levels all in one place. You are able to see the whole picture of your family’s learning and combine where it makes sense instead of trying to piece everything together on your own.

So for a family with multiple ages, a typical day might look like this:

Morning Time together as a family
Younger students do phonics or early language arts while older students do math and written work
Family history reading together with age-appropriate narrations
A science or geography lesson on the days those are scheduled
Lunch and outside time
Afternoon subjects like nature study, handicrafts, art, free reading, or a read aloud

For older students, especially in Form III and high school, the day often becomes more independent. They may still join family Morning Time and some shared subjects, but they will also have their own readings, written narrations, and more advanced assignments. Even then, the rhythm is still meant to feel thoughtful and manageable, not overloaded.

The plans help you know what to do, when to combine, and where to individualize, so the day can feel peaceful, connected, and full without feeling like you are recreating traditional school at home.
